Vienna
I visited Vienna for a week at the end of October 2002, just before starting my PhD thesis. My friend Julia was there at the time so she could show me the most interesting city spots (and I could have free accomodation!).
Vienna is a very nice city, big enough so that I don't get bored, yet small enough not to suffer from the many overpopulation problems that Paris has. I think I would enjoy living there for some years.
Vienna is also very close to the Slovak Republic. We spent one day in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
My friend Julia on the Donaukanal, the Danube Channel.
Karlskirche.
Me in front of the Secession building. Secession was a 20th century art movement that wanted to break with established ideas (Vienna was, and still is, very conservative, artistically speaking).
From Kahlenberg, a hill near Vienna.
Müllverbrennungsanlage, a waste incineration plant which also provides central heating to Vienna. Decorated by Hundertwasser.
Another view of the Müllverbrennungsanlage. See the warm water flowing to the city?
One of Hundertwasser's most famous houses.
Karlsplatz, with a nice old-style tramway.
The city hall.
Schloss Schönbrunn, or the castle of the beautiful water source, and a view of Vienna from a hill in the castle's gardens. Residence to some Austro-Hungarian emperors.
The Augarten.
The Ring, the main street of central Vienna.
Bratislava.

Bratislava.
The Sleeping Beauty (?) on the way back from Bratislava.
